Discovering Greenthing Beach: A Tragedy Transformed into a Coastal Gem in Paiton

East Java’s coastal tourism never ceases to surprise, yet few stories are as poignant and evocative as the history behind Greenthing Beach.

Imagine a once-vibrant settlement, filled with the laughter of residents, now silenced and submerged by the ocean—leaving only the rhythm of the waves over land that once served as the terraces of family homes.

As one of the newest coastal destinations in Probolinggo, Greenthing Beach is more than a place for leisure; it stands as a monument of remembrance for a hamlet that has vanished from the map.

Its presence enriches the collection of East Javanese tourist sites, offering not only sand and surf but also a profound narrative on the power of nature to reshape human history.

A Tragedy Reimagined

In years past, situated just north of the current tourist site, stood the hamlet of Grinting. Fate took a different turn as relentless coastal erosion began to reclaim the land, centimeter by centimeter, over several decades. Homes collapsed and roads were submerged until the entire hamlet was eventually swallowed by the sea.

The name “Greenthing Beach” was chosen deliberately by the residents of Randutatah Village. It serves as a play on words—a linguistic tribute to ensure that the memory of Grinting is not washed away by the tides.

Farhan Abbas, the beach manager, notes that while the younger generation did not witness the hamlet’s heyday, the testimonies of village elders serve as a living record that life once thrived beneath these now-placid waters.

This transformation has turned Greenthing Beach into an emotionally resonant destination where visitors can stand at the water’s edge and contemplate the remnants of a civilization resting on the seabed.

Natural Wonders: A Haven for Shells and Golden Sunsets

Despite its melancholic origins, nature has provided a sense of solace for the local community. The beach is renowned for its extraordinary marine wealth, particularly an abundance of shellfish.

During low tide, visitors can participate in harvesting shells—a unique activity that has become a primary attraction for those seeking an authentic coastal experience in East Java.

For photography enthusiasts and nature lovers, sunset at Greenthing Beach is a moment where time seems to stand still. With no large structures to obstruct the view, the vibrant orange hues of the sky reflect perfectly upon the water’s surface.

Accompanied by a warm coffee from local MSME stalls, the serene atmosphere makes it a favorite retreat for students and families looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Green Exploration: Navigating the Mangrove Labyrinth

The experience at Greenthing Beach is further enriched by its lush mangrove conservation area. Visitors are welcomed by an aesthetic bamboo bridge that weaves through the dense foliage before reaching the shoreline.

Through the support of the Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) Duta Bahari, facilities now include fiber boats that take tourists on an 800-meter journey along the mangrove river. This excursion offers immense tranquility, transporting guests into the heart of Paiton’s coastal ecosystem.

Synergy Between PT Paiton Energy, PT POMI, and Tourism Development

The growth of Greenthing Beach as a key player in East Java’s tourism sector is inseparable from private sector support via Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs.

PT Paiton Energy and PT POMI have played active roles in enhancing the area. Their comprehensive support ranges from providing 7-passenger fiber boats to essential visitor amenities such as beach tables and seating.

Furthermore, these companies have prioritized hygiene and economic empowerment. Contributions include waste carts and bins, as well as the construction of stalls for local MSMEs.

This collaboration aims to create new economic opportunities for the residents of Randutatah Village, ensuring that Greenthing Beach serves not only as a recreational site but also as a catalyst for sustainable village prosperity.

Exploring the beauty of Greenthing Beach provides a fresh perspective on how history and the future can coexist harmoniously. As a destination that prioritizes local wisdom, it successfully demonstrates that the remnants of a lost hamlet can rise again as a shining jewel of tourism.
