Synergy of Humanitarian Programs for Clearer Vision

Probolinggo, December 22, 2025 – As part of efforts to support the realization of the government’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program, which aims to ensure access to healthcare services for all citizens, PT Paiton Energy (Paiton Energy) together with PT Paiton Operation & Maintenance Indonesia (POMI) collaborated with multiple stakeholders to organize a humanitarian program for clearer vision in the form of a Free Cataract Surgery Program, benefiting 200 recipients in Probolinggo Regency, East Java.

The humanitarian program was the result of a collaboration between the CSR program of PT Paiton Energy, the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Headquarters, the Indonesian Red Cross of Probolinggo Regency, and the Probolinggo Regency Government. In its implementation, the initiative also involved professional medical teams from the John Fawcett Foundation (JFF), the Regional Eye Committee (Komatda) of Probolinggo Regency, and the Indonesian Ophthalmologists Association (Perdami), Malang Raya Branch.

The activities were carried out over three days, from Thursday to Saturday, December 18–20, 2025, in Probolinggo Regency. The program comprised free eye examinations, free distribution of eyeglasses at the Probolinggo Regency PMI Headquarters, and free cataract surgeries at Waluyo Jati Regional General Hospital (RSUD Waluyo Jati).

The humanitarian outreach reached more than one thousand community members who participated in the screening process. Through the series of services provided, hundreds of patients benefited from cataract surgeries, free eyeglasses distribution, and the fitting of aesthetic ocular prostheses, in accordance with medical indications.

Cataract surgery is the only effective medical procedure to restore visual function impaired by cataracts, by replacing the clouded natural lens of the eye with a clear artificial lens. In Indonesia, cataract surgery is a priority program in efforts to reduce blindness, as cataracts remain the leading cause of visual impairment, one that is preventable and treatable through appropriate medical intervention.

The Regent of Probolinggo, Dr. Mohammad Haris, also conducted an on-site visit to observe the implementation of the humanitarian program by attending the cataract surgery activities on the second day, Friday (19/12). “Humanitarian initiatives like this are highly beneficial as they help people regain their vision and improve their quality of life. I would like to express my gratitude to PMI, Paiton Energy – POMI, the John Fawcett Foundation (JFF), and all parties who have collaborated. This program brings blessings because it delivers tangible benefits to the community, and we hope that collaborations like this can continue in the future,” said Mohammad Haris.

The Head of External Relations of PT Paiton Energy, Bambang Jiwantoro, stated that the Company’s support for the cataract surgery humanitarian program is part of Paiton Energy’s commitment to improving the quality of public health.

“This free cataract surgery program reflects our concern in helping communities regain better vision, enabling them to carry out daily activities independently and productively. Collaboration with PMI and the local government is key to ensuring that healthcare services can reach more people,” said Bambang Jiwantoro.

According to Human Capital Facilities and Community Manager of PT POMI Rochman Hidayat, the cataract surgery humanitarian program reflects the importance of cross-sector collaboration in expanding public access to healthcare services.

“Collaboration like this ensures that health programs not only run effectively but also deliver tangible and sustainable benefits to the communities they serve. Through synergy with PMI and the local government, we hope that more people will be helped to regain better vision and improve their quality of life,” said Rochman.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Probolinggo Regency, Dr. Adi Nugroho WD, stated that the cataract surgery humanitarian program is part of PMI’s ongoing efforts to reduce the prevalence of blindness in Probolinggo Regency. “The support from Paiton Energy and POMI enables these cataract surgery services to be carried out consistently. Collaboration among various stakeholders is crucial so that more community members can benefit from eye healthcare services,” said Dr. Adi.

One of the beneficiary patients, Mahmud, expressed his gratitude after undergoing cataract surgery. “Alhamdulillah, after the surgery my vision is much clearer, and I am now able to read and carry out my daily activities comfortably again. I would like to thank PMI and Paiton Energy – POMI for providing support and covering the cost of this surgery,” said Mahmud.

Previously, Paiton Energy – POMI had also organized free cataract surgery programs for the Probolinggo community as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiatives in the health sector. In addition, the collaboration between Paiton Energy–POMI and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) of Probolinggo Regency has also extended to environmental programs, including mangrove planting activities through the PMI – Paiton Energy Green Movement.

This synergy reflects a shared commitment to promoting sustainable development through environmental initiatives and community empowerment, including the health sector.

In environmental management and community empowerment (ESG), Paiton Energy – POMI, through Paiton bErsiNERGY, applies the Pentahelix concept, namely synergy and collaboration involving five key components: government, communities, academia, businesses, and the media. These five elements are consistently engaged in every ESG program implemented by Paiton Energy.

PT Paiton Energy – POMI has implemented its CSR program since 2000. The program is designed on an annual basis and monitored by the Community Development Committee. The programs are divided into three focus areas: supporting the sustainability of companies (power plant), socio-economic sustainability, and energy and environmental sustainability.

PT Paiton Energy is the first and one of the largest Independent Power Producer (IPP) operating in Indonesia. The shareholders of the Company consist of RATCH Group, Nebras Power, and Medco Daya Energi Sentosa (MDES).
