Paiton Energy and POMI Support Zero Waste Indonesia 2025

Probolinggo, March 7, 2023 – Through the Paiton bErsiNERGY program, PT Paiton Energy and POMI continue to support efforts to achieve the Zero Waste Indonesia 2025 target. One of them is through a waste management training program to educate the community on the best practices for waste reduction and recycling.

The waste management program is essential to support the Zero Waste Indonesia 2025 target through 30% waste reduction, and 70% waste handling to prevent waste accumulation in landfills by 2025. This is based on the mandate of Presidential Regulation No.97/2017.

As an effort to handle organic waste for Zero Waste, the Company held a workshop on complete waste management for the welfare of the community as the culmination of the 2023 HPSN Commemoration series of activities. This workshop event was filled with training in making Eco Enzyme. The activity was held at the Recreation Hall POH 1 – POMI, Probolinggo Regency on February 25, 2023.

Eco Enzyme is the result of fermentation of organic waste such as fruit and vegetable pulp.  Eco Enzyme is a multi-purpose liquid that can be used for households such as multi-purpose cleaning liquid, plant fertilizer (agriculture), and pest exterminator (livestock).

The Eco Enzyme Workshop was attended by 150 participants from various communities in Probolinggo Regency and Situbondo Regency. Among others, representatives of DLH Probolinggo and DLH Situbondo, waste bank communities in Probolinggo and Situbondo areas, MSME group, representatives of educational institutions and Islamic boarding schools, and the general public.

In the peak event of the commemoration of National Waste Care Day (HSPN) which is celebrated every February 21, in addition to the Eco Enzyme training, PE-POMI officially launched the Sampah Jadi Cuan application, as a digital-based waste shuttle service that can reach the neighborhoods of Probolinggo and Situbondo districts.

The Sampah Jadi Cuan application was launched for Android users for free without having to download through the Play Store. In it, users are given a scheduled household inorganic waste pick-up feature.

On this occasion, PE-POMI also gave appreciation to 5 (five) groups of community empowerment partners in the environmental field in the form of award certificates, they are Binor Lestari Waste Bank, Sumberkembar Waste Bank and Banyuglugur Waste Bank as active and sustainable waste banks that empower communities through waste management.

Furthermore, MTSN 1 Paiton received an award as an environmentally friendly school that applies a green lifestyle to the entire school community. And the last award was given to IKM Srikandi, as a category of IKM that implements circular economy. IKM Srikandi has processed fish scale waste into gelatin and collagen products. In addition to cleaning the environment, IKM Srikandi gets economic benefits from processing fish scale waste.

Previously, the Company has also held diaper waste management training in collaboration with the PKK group & Binor Village Waste Bank, as well as the introduction of the waste bank program by the Probolinggo district waste bank community for the Sidopekso Village community, which was held on February 19, 2023.

Another program, the company in cooperation with the Environmental Bureau of Probolinggo Regency is developing sustainable waste management. The program does not only help mitigating environmental issues but also generating wider benefit. One of the programs is the study in converting the waste to Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) which could provide alternative fuel for industries which includes its use in co-firing trials in Coal-fired Power Plant.

President Director of PT POMI Sugiyanto said these programs are the Company’s efforts to implement Environmental Social and Governance (ESG), that is by synergizing climate change mitigation and adaptation programs through economic empowerment programs. In addition to increasing community awareness of waste reduction and handling so as not to accumulate in the landfill.

“The Company believes in the power of education and community engagement to promote responsible waste management practices for environmental sustainability as well as economic improvement,” said Sugiyanto.

The Paiton bErsiNERGY program is implemented by Paiton Energy and POMI with a pentahelix approach, a multi-stakeholder partnership between the government, private sector, academia, civil society and mass media.

“I hope that the participants will be able to inherit the spirit, insight and skills in managing environmentally-oriented waste, so as to support a sustainable economy,” said Dwijoko Nurjayadi.

Community representative Siti Nur Seha who was one of the workshop participants, said the training was a form of PE-POMI’s appreciation to MSME businesses, communities, and educational institutions that have supported environmental aspects.

“I am also grateful to PE-POMI for the re-launch of the waste pick-up application which is certainly very useful for managing waste. Hopefully, this training can provide a strong positive image for PE-POMI and can stimulate other institutions to follow the same steps,” said Siti Nur Seha who is also the head of IKM Srikandi.
