Paiton Energy Strengthens Commitment to the Environment

Probolinggo, June 12, 2023 – PT Paiton Energy strengthened its commitment to the environment by signing a statement of business support for the Development of Social Forestry Business Groups (KUPS) with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). This KUPS development support is one form of Social and Environmental Innovation.

The Statement was signed at the Dr. Soedjarwo Auditorium, Manggala Wanabakti, Jakarta, during the PeSona (National Social Forestry) Festival on Monday (5/6). PeSona was organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) in order to welcome World Environment Day which is celebrated annually on June 5.

The statement was signed by Bayu Anggoro Widyanto, Chief Financial Officer of Paiton Energy, together with Dr. Ir. Bambang Suprianto, M.Sc., as Director General of Social Forestry and Environmental Partnership, and witnessed by Ir. Sigit Reliantoro, M.Sc., as Director General of Environmental Pollution and Damage Control. In addition to Paiton Energy, several other companies also signed statements of support, including PT Semen Padang, PT Pertamina, PT PLN Indonesia Power, and PT Astra International Tbk.

Chief Financial Officer of PT Paiton Energy Bayu Widyanto said that through this program, the Company would play an active role in implementing social and environmental innovations by supporting the improved performance of the Social Forest program.

Director General of Social Forestry and Environmental Partnership Dr. Ir. Bambang Suprianto, M.Sc., stated that Social and Environmental Innovation with the involvement of Proper participants in Social Forestry Management is implemented through capacity building of Social Forestry Groups which can be in the form of institutional strengthening, area management development and entrepreneurship development and business cooperation.

Director General of Environmental Pollution and Damage Control Ir. Sigit Reliantoro, M.Sc., stated that social innovation produces a transformation in society through changing structures, creating new relationships, allowing the entry of new actors in social dynamics and the participation of more actors. Social and Environmental Innovation in the Social Forest program is expected to end poverty, resolve social inequality, and empower women.

Paiton Energy will continue to enhance its positive environmental impact through sustainable business practices and continuous environmental performance improvement initiatives. The company synergizes its climate change management activities through the Paiton bErsiNERGY Program. The program is implemented with a pentahelix approach, a multi-stakeholder partnership between the government, private sector, academia, civil society, and mass media.

Moringa Tree Planting

Paiton Energy and POMI also used the momentum of World Environment Day to be more active in contributing to efforts to preserve nature. In addition to the signing of the Green Proper MOU, the Company, together with the Pondokkelor Village Government, planted Moringa trees in Pondokkelor Village, Paiton sub-district, Probolinggo Regency, which is located near the Company's operational area.

The activity was held on June 4, 2023, involving various elements of society with a total of 200 participants consisting of the Probolinggo District Environment Office, Paiton Sub-District Head, Paiton Police Chief, Danramil Paiton, BUMDESA, PKK, Pondokkelor Village Residents, Farmer Groups, Alam Hijau Community Organization and Forest Shield, Scouts. The number of trees planted reached 1,070, consisting of 1,040 Moringa tree seedlings and 30 Tabebuya trees.

Human Resources Manager of POMI Rochman Hidayat said that the Company is always committed to mitigating climate change, this Moringa tree planting activity is very important for environmental sustainability. In addition, Moringa trees are also useful for improving the nutrition of the surrounding community. Moringa trees not only can be made into vegetables but can also be made into drinks or food.

"Moringa tree was chosen as the species planted in this activity because it has many benefits. Moringa trees help in soil conservation, carbon sequestration, as well as supporting local biodiversity. Through Moringa tree planting, the Company hopes to provide long-term benefits to the environment and local communities," Rochman said.

Pondokkelor Village Head Fredericks Ade Candra said that the name Pondokkelor Village used to come from a house made of Moringa trees. At that time, Moringa trees also decorated the local village road. But over time, Moringa trees in this village began to disappear, and there were almost no Moringa tree plants. With this activity, it is hoped that Pondokkelor Village will again be decorated with Moringa trees.

"I invite the people of Pondokkelor Village to participate in maintaining and caring for these Moringa trees until they grow big because there are so many benefits for the village greening program," Fredericks said.

Representative of the Probolinggo Regency Environmental Agency Subiono said that he really appreciated the planting activity, this will foster a sense of community concern for the environment. In addition, Subiono hopes that the Moringa tree planting program will continue in the future.

Paiton Energy has implemented its CSR program since 2000 which was designed annually and monitored by the Community Development Committee. The programs are categorized into three focuses, namely supporting the sustainability of Companies (power plant), socio-economic sustainability, and energy and environmental sustainability.
