Paiton Energy and POMI Generate Water for Community Welfare

Probolinggo, April 6, 2023 – As an effort to manage sustainably water resources and improve community welfare, PT Paiton Energy (PE) and POMI through the Paiton bErsiNERGY program run a Spring Protection Program in Binor Village, Paiton Sub-district, Probolinggo Regency, East Java.

For this program, PE-POMI won the Indonesia Green Award 2023 in the Water Resources Rescue Category for the program of Improving Community Welfare through Upstream and Downstream Synergy in Binor Village in protecting springs.

Binor Village is an area where most of the population lives in the coastal area which lacks clean water sources. As the activities of the local community increase, it becomes increasingly difficult to fulfill the need for clean water. In addition, water resources in the village are generally brackish and salty.

To overcome this problem, PE-POMI conserves water springs as a source of life in the form of the upstream and downstream synergy of water sources in Binor Village.

This activity is part of an acceleration program to overcome the water and sanitation crisis, and to improve the protection of vital resources. This is in line with the 2023 World Water Day theme, Accelerating Change, that is commemorated every March 22.

The forms of water springs conservation carried out by PE-POMI includes planting water-binding trees in the spring area, artesian water drilling, homes piping, installation of solar panels for electricity needs in water reservoirs, and waste disposal and utilization socialization.

This has had a positive impact on the water availability in Binor Village, in addition to fulfill household needs, water is used to grow crops in the yard and also for agriculture. Currently, the total number of beneficiaries of the program is 400 families, after the community obtains clean water with pipelines installed in each resident’s house, the average cost for clean water is only IDR 50 – 70 thousand/month/household. The value is ten times more efficient than before which reached IDR 400 – 680 thousand/month/household.

Head of External Relations of PT Paiton Energy Bambang Jiwantoro said that in 2006 the Company began to initiate the management and availability of clean water for the benefit of the community in Binor Village as a concrete practice of the Company’s social responsibility towards the source of life that concerns the livelihood of many people.

“The need for clean water in Binor Village is excessive so this program continues to be developed every year. The clean water sanitation program has been implemented in Binor Village since 2006-2022,” said Bambang.

In implementing the Spring Protection Program in Binor Village, the Company also cooperates with various parties. Among others, Binor Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes), and community groups.

Binor BUMDes Chairman A. Nur Hasan Daironi said the clean water program run by PE-POMI is also supported by the Binor Village community. The community participates in maintaining and planting trees in each house and around the water springs.

“The achievement of the objectives of the program implementation is not only limited to the provision of clean water but also the improvement of the economy and environment-based public health, and no less important is the capacity and knowledge of the community on how to protect water sources so that local heroes emerge in Binor Village in the field of environmental conservation,” said Nur Hasan.

The Paiton bErsiNERGY program is implemented by Paiton Energy and POMI with a pentahelix approach, a multi-stakeholder partnership between the government, private sector, academia, civil society, and mass media.

Binor Village Head Hj Hostifawati said she appreciates the efforts made by PE-POMI in the clean water program in Binor Village. By making a reservoir, the clean water flow that passes through residents’ houses can be used for consumption and for watering plants.

“Hopefully in the future, there will be more green open spaces in Binor Village that can store clean water and are also environmentally friendly,” said Hostifawati.

Paiton Energy has implemented its CSR program since 2000. It was designed annually and monitored by the Community Development Committee. The programs are divided into three focuses namely, supporting the sustainability of Companies (power plant), socio-economic sustainability, and energy and environmental sustainability.
