Energy Transition Must Safeguard System Reliability and Tariff Affordability

Jakarta, February 13, 2026 – The President Director of PT Paiton Energy, Fazil Erwin Alfitri, stated that the energy transition must maintain system reliability while ensuring electricity tariff affordability for both the public and industry. In this regard, gas plays a role as a flexible fuel to support the transition to new and renewable energy.

“Gas plays an important role as a transition fuel because it is capable of providing flexible power and responding quickly to load fluctuations, while also supporting the integration of new and renewable energy,” said Fazil Erwin Alfitri. On the other hand, improving the performance of coal-fired power plants through operational efficiency and the utilization of cleaner technologies is also part of the strategy to maintain the stability of the electricity system.

The President Director of PT Paiton Energy, Fazil Erwin Alfitri, shared this perspective while speaking as one of the panelists at the discussion titled “Towards Sustainable Energy Supply: Supporting Indonesia’s Energy Transition and Economic Growth” during the Energy Forward with Mitsubishi Power Indonesia event held in Jakarta on Thursday (12/2).

At the panel discussion event, Ario P. Pramono Jati, Coordinator for Power Generation Planning at the Directorate General of Electricity, Ministry ESDM, delivered the keynote speech.

According to Ario P. Pramono Jati, the national energy transition must maintain a balance between system reliability, tariff affordability, and environmental sustainability. He explained that strengthening the electricity system should be carried out through optimizing existing generation assets, improving energy efficiency, and developing flexible power plants such as gas and geothermal to maintain system stability.

Ario stated that grid modernization and enhanced system flexibility are key to supporting the integration of new and renewable energy into the national energy mix. These efforts must be implemented gradually and in a measured manner to ensure they continue to support economic growth while achieving long-term energy mix targets as outlined in the National Electricity General Plan (RUKN).

During the panel discussion, Fazil Erwin Alfitri explained that strengthening the national energy system requires an integrated, realistic, and reliability-based approach.

“The energy transition must maintain system reliability while ensuring electricity tariff affordability for both the public and industry. Gas serves as a flexible transition fuel to meet growing demand and strengthen the system’s reserve margin within the grid. At the same time, optimizing existing coal and gas assets, accompanied by responsible grid management, constitutes a practical strategy to maintain system sustainability and reliability over the next decade,” said Fazil.

In addition to Fazil Erwin Alfitri, the panel discussion also featured Bernadus Sudarmanta, President Director of PLN Indonesia Power; Hendra Soetjipto Tan, President Director of PT Barito Renewables Energy Tbk; and Nobuhiro Kawai, President Director of Mitsubishi Power Indonesia. The discussion was moderated by Sacha Winzenried, Energy, Utilities & Resources and Energy Transition Leader at PwC Indonesia.

The forum also highlighted the importance of collaboration among the government, IPPs, utilities, and industry players in aligning policies, investments, and technological development to strengthen the foundation of Indonesia’s electricity system over the next decade.

As one of the largest independent power producers in Indonesia, PT Paiton Energy remains committed to supporting the national energy transition agenda through the management of reliable, efficient, and sustainable power plants, as well as through long-term partnerships with various stakeholders.

PT Paiton Energy is the first and one of the largest Independent Power Producer (IPP) operating in Indonesia. The shareholders of the Company consist of RATCH Group, Nebras Power, and Medco Daya Energi Sentosa (MDES).
