Probolinggo, October 7, 2025 – PT Paiton Energy (Paiton Energy) and PT Paiton Operation & Maintenance Indonesia (POMI) are committed to restoring vision and combating blindness. Through the Paiton bErsiNERGY Program, they once again held a free cataract surgery program for underprivileged communities. The program is conducted over two weeks, starting on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, coinciding with the commemoration of World Sight Day, which falls on the second Thursday of October.
The Free Cataract Surgery program is a collaboration with PT Jawa Power and Rizani Hospital in Probolinggo, East Java. A total of 100 patients have registered to participate in the program, with an average of 10 patients undergoing cataract surgery each day. This program is a continuation of a similar initiative successfully carried out in February 2025, which benefited more than 100 patients in Probolinggo and Situbondo.
The opening ceremony was attended by Bayu Anggoro Widyanto, Chief Financial Officer of PT Paiton Energy; Andy Budiarto, Technical Manager of PT Jawa Power; Saniwar, S.Sos., M.Si., Expert Staff for Community and Human Resources Affairs representing the Regent of Probolinggo; and Mirrah Samiyah, Director of Rizani Hospital. On this occasion, the Probolinggo Regency Joint Action for Cataract Care 2025 was also signed as a cross-sector commitment to support efforts in eliminating blindness caused by cataracts in the region.
This Paiton bErsiNERGY CSR program in the health sector is part of Paiton Energy – POMI’s efforts to support the government’s initiative to reduce blindness caused by cataracts, while also aligning with the Right to Sight initiative by the World Health Organization (WHO). The program is also expected to raise public awareness of the importance of early detection and treatment of cataracts through surgery.
Cataract surgery is the only effective treatment to restore vision and eliminate blindness caused by cataracts, by removing the cloudy eye lens and replacing it with a clear artificial lens. In Indonesia, this surgery has become a priority program to reduce the rate of blindness. Cataracts are the leading cause of visual impairment and preventable blindness.
Chief Financial Officer of PT Paiton Energy, Bayu Widyanto, stated that the Company believes eyesight is a vital sense for humans. Vision loss caused by cataracts can lead to a decline—or even a complete loss—of a person’s productivity. Yet, blindness due to cataracts is a condition that can be rehabilitated.
“Our consistency in organizing free cataract surgery reflects the Company’s genuine concern for helping people regain their sight and return to productive lives, thereby improving their quality of life and ultimately strengthening Indonesia’s future,” said Bayu Widyanto.
Meanwhile, Human Capital Facilities and Community Manager of PT POMI, Rochman Hidayat, emphasized that this activity is one of the forms of the company’s social responsibility implementation in the health sector.
“This activity demonstrates real synergy between the company and medical professionals in providing healthcare solutions for the community. Through the momentum of World Sight Day, we hope to encourage more parties to care about efforts to prevent blindness caused by cataracts,” said Rochman.
Director of Rizani Hospital, Mirrah Samiyah, explained that cataracts are changes that occur in the eye’s lens, which should normally be clear and transparent but gradually become cloudy. Cataracts do not develop suddenly; most cases are caused by the natural aging process in individuals over 40 years old.
Several factors that can cause cataracts include inflammation, diabetes, eye trauma (injury), congenital abnormalities, and nutritional deficiencies (lack of antioxidants). “Many people are unaware that cataracts can be cured through surgery, and the lack of financial means for treatment has led to the high number of cataract patients in Indonesia,” said Mirrah.
The cataract surgeries at Rizani Hospital are handled by a team of experienced ophthalmologists and medical professionals. Each patient undergoes a series of procedures, including pre-operative examinations, the surgery itself, and post-operative check-ups to ensure optimal recovery results.
Through this collaborative CSR initiative, Paiton Energy – POMI, together with Jawa Power and YTL Jawa Timur, hope to expand the benefits of health programs for the community and strengthen cross-sector collaboration to realize more inclusive access to healthcare services.
PT Paiton Energy – POMI has implemented its CSR program since 2000. The program is designed on an annual basis and monitored by the Community Development Committee. The programs are divided into three focus areas: supporting the sustainability of companies (power plant), socio-economic sustainability, and energy and environmental sustainability.
PT Paiton Energy is the first and one of the largest Independent Power Producer (IPP) operating in Indonesia. The shareholders of the Company consist of RATCH Group, Nebras Power, and Medco Daya Energi Sentosa (MDES).
