Climate Change Mitigation Action, PE and POMI Plant 34,000 Trees

Probolinggo, January 30, 2023 – PT Paiton Energy (PE) and PT Paiton Operation & Maintenance Indonesia (POMI) continue to play an active role in climate change mitigation. Recently, the Company collaborated with community groups in Kaliacar and Ranu Wurung villages, Gading District, Probolinggo Regency, East Java, to organize a tree planting activity involving 34,000 gamal trees.

This initiative is an integral part of a program aimed at preserving environmental sustainability and empowering communities through a social forestry program. The activity also serves as a celebration of World Tree Planting Day, which falls on January 10.

The main objective of the tree planting is the Company’s commitment to implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects. This is also to ensure that the Company contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly point 13, which includes action on climate change, and point 15, which aims to protect, restore and support terrestrial ecosystems.

Planting trees is one of the best ways to mitigate climate change because trees have a natural ability to absorb carbon emissions from the atmosphere in a relatively short period of time. Planting trees also has economic benefits for the surrounding community.

The selection of gamal trees as the focus for planting is based not only on ecological considerations, but also on economic ones. gamal trees provide dual benefits as guardians of forest sustainability and as a source of food, fodder and natural fuel.

The benefits of planting gamal trees include environmental conservation and forest sustainability, community economic development through the processing of gamal wood into wood pellet biomass, and the benefits of serving as livestock feed that can increase local agricultural productivity.

President Director of POMI, Sugiyanto said that the activity of planting 34,000 gamal trees is a mitigation of climate change as well as maintaining environmental sustainability and providing economic benefits through a social forestry program.

“Ultimately, it is hoped to provide long-term welfare benefits for the communities in Kaliacar Village and Ranu Wurung,” said Sugiyanto.

Chairman of the Alam Subur Farmer Group, Sudaryono said that in the spirit of mutual cooperation, the communities of Kaliacar Village and Ranu Wurung actively participated in the gamal tree planting activity. “The choice of gamal trees is not only based on ecological considerations but also on economic aspects as we believe that gamal trees will provide multiple benefits as guardians of forest sustainability and sources of food, fodder and natural fuel,” said Sudaryono.

Paiton Energy will continue to enhance its positive environmental impact through sustainable business practices and continuous environmental performance improvement initiatives. The Company synergizes its climate change management activities through the Paiton bErsiNERGY Program.
The Paiton bErsiNERGY program has also proven to be successfully implemented by the Company. Recently, PE-POMI won a prestigious award, the Indonesia Green Awards 2024 on January 17, 2024 in Jakarta for the success of the “Popok ke Pot” program (From Waste to the Best). This award is concrete proof that PE-POMI’s efforts in maintaining environmental sustainability and empowering the community not only have a positive impact locally but are also widely recognized and appreciated.

Paiton Energy has implemented its CSR program since 2000 which was designed annually and monitored by the Community Development Committee. The programs are categorized into three focuses, namely supporting the sustainability of Companies (power plant), socio-economic sustainability, and energy and environmental sustainability.
