Cleft Lip Surgery Improves Quality of Life for Children

Probolinggo, May 3, 2025 – Through the synergy of various stakeholders, 12 toddlers successfully underwent cleft lip and palate surgery on Saturday (3/5) at Rizani Hospital in Probolinggo, East Java. This free surgery activity is expected to improve the quality of life of children under the age of five in the future.

The activity, which was held during the Cleft Lip and/or Palate Awareness Week from May 3 to 11, 2025, was the result of a Penta Helix collaboration, namely the Probolinggo District Government, the Probolinggo Social Welfare Activities Coordinator (K3S), PT Paiton Energy and PT Paiton Operation & Maintenance Indonesia (POMI), the Surabaya Cleft Lip & Palate (CLP) Center Foundation and Rizani Hospital.

Cleft lip and palate have a far-reaching impact on regions and countries, including economic, social and health consequences. Economically, children with unresolved CLP may have difficulty obtaining adequate education and employment.

Medically, CLP can cause a variety of health problems, including hearing loss, eating disorders, speech and breathing problems, and ear infections. Social stigma can also limit the ability of people with CLP to integrate into society.

Medical surgery can correct the physical condition of the lip and palate. Ultimately, this will improve self-confidence and reduce the social stigma often experienced by children with this condition.

Head of External Relations of PT Paiton Energy Bambang Jiwantoro said the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in addressing public health issues, including cleft lip and/or palate conditions. The company believes that the Penta Helix synergy is the foundation of the program’s success.

“Cleft lip surgery requires not only medical intervention, but also social support, logistics and solid communication. That is why we involve various stakeholders in Penta Helix: government, community, business, medical personnel, and the media. We greatly appreciate the support of various parties, including K3S Probolinggo and the Probolinggo Regency Government, which is expected to help strengthen the social impact of this program,” said Bambang Jiwantoro.

Hospital Director of RS Rizani Dr. Mirrah Samiyah said the program reflects an ongoing commitment to help Indonesian children live healthier and more confident lives. This activity was held as a continuation of an initiative that has been running since August 2024.

“We believe that every child has the same right to grow and develop optimally, without the obstacles of congenital health conditions such as cleft lip. Through this activity, we want to ensure that the beneficiary children have the same opportunity to live a healthy and confident life,” said Dr. Mirrah Samiyah.

Surabaya CLP Center’s Medical Team Leader Dr. Lobredia Zarasade expressed her appreciation for the cooperation in the implementation of cleft lip and/or palate surgery in Probolinggo. This activity is part of the long-standing cooperation between the CLP Center and the Probolinggo District Government.

“Thank you for the support of the Probolinggo Regency Government, PT Paiton Energy and PT POMI for making this activity possible. This cooperation is important for the sustainability of our cleft treatment services. We are also working closely with medical personnel and partner organizations who are supporting today’s activities. We hope that the surgery will go smoothly and have a positive impact on the beneficiary children,” said Dr. Lobredia Zarasade.

Meanwhile, Hary Kriswanto, as Assistant Regent of Probolinggo Regency, said that this collaboration is a very important activity to support the vision of health in Probolinggo Regency which carries “SAE” (Synergy, Action, Effectiveness), namely, to realize a healthy, prosperous and competitive Probolinggo Regency by improving the quality of health services, increasing public awareness of health and collaboration among stakeholders.

“Hopefully, this activity can be continued so that the health development efforts in Probolinggo Regency are not limited to the urban area, but can also reach remote areas of the village,” said Hary Kriswanto.

Through this program, PT Paiton Energy and POMI once again demonstrated their active role in supporting the quality of life of Indonesia’s future generations, while strengthening the principle of Penta Helix cooperation in implementing CSR in the healthcare sector. This program is a continuation of a similar activity held on August 17, 2024, which was also held at Rizani Hospital, Probolinggo.

In every CSR implementation, PT Paiton Energy and POMI always apply the concept of Penta Helix, which is a synergy and collaboration involving five key components: government, community, academia, business and media. These five elements are consistently involved in every CSR program organized by PE and POMI.
