Since 2010, PT Paiton Energy, in partnership with PT POMI, has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental preservation and community empowerment through a massive and systematically inventoried tree-planting program.
This initiative involves planting in various strategic locations, ranging from conservation areas to external rehabilitation sites. This program is more than just an annual activity; it is a tangible manifestation of the company’s long-term vision to create a greener, more stable, and sustainable future.
To date, the cumulative total of trees planted since 2010, including projections, has reached an impressive figure: 692,658 tree seedlings. This number is spread across various programs strategically designed to yield maximum ecological and economic benefits.
Annual Tree Planting Track Record (2010–2025)
The inventory data shows fluctuations in the annual planting figures, which are adjusted based on program priorities and location needs.
This variation reflects both the flexibility and the consistent commitment of PT Paiton Energy and PT POMI to maintaining environmental sustainability, even amidst global and local challenges.
A graphical representation would be more engaging than a table, but for comprehensive data, the summary of the planting achievements during the 2010–2025 period is provided below:
| Year | Number of Trees (Seedlings) | Year | Number of Trees (Seedlings) |
| 2010 | 77,050 | 2018 | 5,000 |
| 2011 | 77,265 | 2019 | 12,150 |
| 2012 | 53,803 | 2020 | 340 |
| 2013 | 46,201 | 2021 | 27,000 |
| 2014 | 89,796 | 2022 | 31,273 |
| 2015 | 43,200 | 2023 | 39,680 |
| 2016 | 41,550 | 2024 | 58,900 |
| 2017 | 3,715 | 2025 (Proj.) | 85,735 |
The highest peak in planting was recorded in 2014 with nearly 90,000 trees, dominated by Teak (Jati) and Gmelina species through the In-situ Conservation scheme. Meanwhile, the projection for 2025 shows a significant surge, signaling the company’s commitment to reinforcing investment in tree planting for a greener and more sustainable future.
Program Pillars: Conservation, Rehabilitation, and Empowerment
The planting program is founded upon four main, mutually supporting pillars designed to create lasting ecological and social impact:
1. In-situ Conservation (Community Forest Development)
Centered in Selobanteng Village, the company actively plants commercial and conservation trees such as Teak, Gmelina, and several types of spring protection plants.
The primary goal of this program is to create productive community forests, providing direct economic benefits to local farmers through timber and non-timber products.
A concrete example is the planting of Arabica coffee, which serves as both agricultural product diversification and a ground cover plant to maintain soil quality.
2. External Rehabilitation and Reforestation
This initiative is expanded to villages surrounding the power plant facilities, in collaboration with the local governments of Probolinggo, Situbondo, and Lumajang Regencies. Key focus areas include:
- Mangroves: Mass planting is conducted in coastal areas such as Binor Village, Grinting Beach (Probolinggo), and Kampung Blekok (Situbondo). Mangroves are vital in protecting the coastline from abrasion, while also serving as a critical habitat for marine and coastal ecosystems. In Binor, planting includes Mangroves, Breadfruit (Sukun), and Longan (Kelengkeng), illustrating a combination of conservation and productive plants.
- Fruit Trees: Species like Longan, Durian, Avocado, and Jackfruit are donated to various locations, including schools and pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools, such as Genggong Pesantren) and agricultural agencies. Beyond reforestation, this program supports nutritional education and food security.
- Shade Trees: Planting trees such as Trembesi and Glodok Tiang in public areas and along main roads to create comfortable green spaces.
3. Energy Plantation Forest
A portion of the program is allocated for planting Gamal in the Forest Farmer Groups (Kelompok Tani Hutan – KTH) within the Energy Plantation Forest area as part of the Social Forestry program in Gading District, Probolinggo Regency.
Gamal is a fast-growing tree species often utilized as a source of biomass or alternative energy, aligning with the company’s energy sustainability vision.
Impact and Continuity
With hundreds of thousands of trees planted, PT Paiton Energy and PT POMI have made significant contributions to: enhance land cover, carbon sequestration, spring revitalization, watershed protection, and improved air quality.
In addition to the ecological benefits, the program also empowers the community through cultivation training, distribution of superior seedlings, and the creation of new business opportunities, such as developing the Mangrove area into ecotourism sites.
Through the synergy of planned environmental strategies and consistent execution, the tree-planting efforts by PT Paiton Energy and PT POMI are more than just fulfilling a corporate social responsibility; they represent a fundamental social investment.
This is a pledge to plant a better future for all Indonesian society.
