Paiton Energy Develops Permaculture Farming for Resilient and Growing Indonesia

Jakarta, August 27, 2021 - PT Paiton Energy (the “Company” or “Paiton Energy”) develops permaculture agriculture as a real effort by the Company to support government programs to strengthen assistance to farmers. The integrated farming system can also be an attraction for the millennial generation to be more interested in working as farmers, in line with President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) appeal.

Chief Financial Officer of PT Paiton Energy Bayu Widyanto said the agricultural sector is important in building Indonesia's food self-sufficiency. The agricultural sector has also proven to be one of the formidable sectors of the Indonesian economy when facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. "The development of permaculture is very strategic for Resilient and Growing Indonesia," he said.

Paiton Energy developed a permaculture-based integrated farming program in Ngepung Village, Sukapura District, Probolinggo Regency, East Java.

The program was initiated by Paiton Energy, PT Paiton Operation & Maintenance Indonesia (POMI), and the Healthy Probolinggo District Forum (FKPS). Meanwhile, the management is carried out by the Bromo Authentic Permaculture Farmers Group (Poktan) Probolinggo Green Sustainable Integrated Farming (Baper Progressive).

The management of permaculture is in the form of integrated agriculture. Apart from organic farming, there are also livestock and fisheries.

The concepts are integrated and complementary. Livestock waste is used for agriculture. Likewise, agricultural waste will be used for animal husbandry, so it continues to rotate.

According to Bambang Jiwantoro, CFS Manager of PT Paiton Energy - POMI, the development of permaculture in Ngepung Village is divided into five stages. For now, it is the first stage (zone one). In the future, in zone five, there will be development of trekking tours, waterfalls, and the Energy - Microhydro Learning House PROGRAM with a capacity of 10KW.

Dr. dr. Mirrah Samiyah MARS, head of FKPS said the permaculture farming system applies a sustainable way of life and adheres to the principle of balance and sustainability. Permaculture is a way of living a life working with nature and learning from them, rather than fighting or competing with them.

So, the presence of permaculture will also support local government programs in developing the Bromo, Tengger, Semeru (BTS) tourism center. This educational tourism object will be a supporter of the tourist attraction of Bromo and its surroundings.

In addition to being useful for realizing food independence, environmental conservation, and alternative tourism, according to Bayu Widyanto, permaculture can make farmers into a profession that brings prosperity. In the end, this can make the younger generation more interested in becoming farmers.

In an effort to encourage the younger generation to be more interested in working as farmers, Paiton Energy has continuously supported the development of organic agriculture, one of which is through support to the Cempiring Paiton Farmers Group led by Rachmad Yogi (a millennial farmer born in Probolinggo). Yogi had participated in a horticultural cultivation internship in Japan in 2012.

After his internship, Yogi was persistent in developing horticultural cultivation and formed the Cempiring Farmers Group.

The support of Paiton Energy – POMI is an important part of developing the Cempiring Farmer Group into a Self-help Rural Agricultural Training Center (P4S) - Yoganik is trusted by the Ministry of Agriculture to foster Indonesian youth before they leave for horticultural cultivation internships to Japan. This Training Center also support Paiton Energy's CSR program – POMI, especially in the development of organic agriculture.

Paiton Energy has implemented a Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) since 2000 which is designed annually and monitored by the Community Development Committee. Programs are categorized into three focuses, namely supporting the sustainability of companies (generating plants), socio-economic sustainability, and energy and environmental sustainability.

Currently Paiton Energy is also committed and working hard to maintain the electricity supply from the Company’s units (units 7, 8, and 3) during this challenging pandemic situation to fully support the efforts of PT PLN (Persero) to maintain the reliability of the Java, Madura, and Bali grids.
