Paiton Energy and POMI Successfully Create an 8,500 m2 Biodiversity Garden
Jakarta, June 2, 2022 – PT Paiton Energy and POMI actively participate in being part of the solution to biodiversity problems both locally and nationally. One of its manifestations is the Biodiversity Garden program in the housing complex for employees of PLTU Paiton Energy (POH 2).
The Biodiversity Garden program is located on an area of 8,500 m2 and has been under construction since 2014. This program is the result of collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Purwodadi Botanical Gardens.
In this program the Company makes efforts to conserve tree species that are already rare and threatened with extinction. The tree is not only a local species, but also a rare tree in Indonesia.
The purpose of Paiton Energy and POMI to create a Biodiversity Garden, among others, is to carry out ex-situ conservation efforts, increase understanding and awareness and foster a love for biodiversity on earth. This is in line with the goal of celebrating Biodiversity Day every 22 May.
Biodiversity is the answer to the challenges of sustainable development, climate change and food security.
Recognizing the importance of biodiversity, Paiton Energy and POMI have also carried out a biodiversity protection program in areas outside the PLTU Paiton complex. The program is also part of climate change mitigation.
Among them, the Community Forest program which is synergized with improving welfare in Selobanteng Village, and mangrove forest conservation in Blekok Village, both are located in Situbondo, East Java.
The Selobanteng Community Forest has provided benefits in the form of environmental sustainability, improving the people's economy, and mitigating climate change through the absorption of carbon emissions. Every year the carbon emission absorbed in the Community Forest is at least 3,853 tonsC/Ha.
Meanwhile, mangrove conservation in Blekok Village is part of climate change mitigation. These conservation efforts are also synergized with improving community welfare through ecotourism and the creative economy.
Paiton Energy's Chief Financial Officer, Bayu Widyanto said the Company cares and actively invests in the environment because biodiversity is very important to preserve the earth. This is an effort to build a common future for all life.
“Efforts to maintain biodiversity must be supported by all parties. So, we actively participate in making the earth a proper place for all creatures to live in harmony,” said Bayu. In this case, the Company collaborates with all parties including the media. We also synergize this investment program for the earth with economic improvement for the surrounding community.
CFS Manager of PT Paiton Energy – POMI Bambang Jiwantoro said the Company implemented efforts to conserve rare and endangered trees in building this Biodiversity Garden. Rare plant gardens, fruit plant gardens, medicinal plant gardens, ornamental plant gardens, and mixed jungle forest plant parks are the themes taken in completing the collection of plants in the Biodiversity Park.
"We have planted a total of 6,000 specimen trees in the Biodiversity Garden area and we have introduced them to educational institutions in Probolinggo Regency. We hope that with this park, there will be more green open spaces which of course will make the environment more sustainable," said Bambang.
In the future, the Biodiversity Garden will also function as a Probolinggo Educational Park. For this project, the Company was awarded the Indonesia Green Award for the category of Biodiversity Development in 2016, 2021 and 2022.
Paiton Energy has implemented its CSR program since 2000 which was designed annually and monitored by the Community Development Committee. The programs are categorized into three focuses, namely supporting the sustainability of Companies (power plant), socio-economic sustainability, and energy and environmental sustainability.
