Paiton Energy and POMI Hold a Green Lifestyle and Plant 15,000 Mangrove Seeds

Probolinggo, June 27, 2022 – In an effort to improve environmental quality and mitigate climate change, PT Paiton Energy and POMI organize healthy and green lifestyle activities, and plant 15,000 mangrove seedlings.

The activity was held to also participate in commemorating World Environment Day 2022 with the theme "We have #OnlyOneEarth. What will you do to protect it.”

One of the activities carried out by Paiton Energy and POMI is to organize a Cycling Together event which is followed by each participant planting trees at the Paiton Power Plant in Probolinggo, East Java, Friday (24/6).

The event with the theme "Think Globally Act Locally" was attended by around 200 people consisting of employees and contractors. Also in attendance were the Head of the Environmental Service of Probolinggo Regency, Head of the Environmental Service of Situbondo Regency, KSOP Probolinggo, Head of Bhinor Village, Head of Selobanteng Village, and the PLTU around Paiton (PT. PJB UP Paiton, PT. PJB UBJ OM Paiton, PT. YTL).

Joint Cycling Activities as an educational and socialization effort so that everyone participates in reducing carbon emissions. Cycling is a zero-pollution solution. The number of tree seedlings planted amounted to 100 seedlings. The tree seeds planted are carbon-absorbing and fruit trees for bird food, including Mimba, Kiara Payung, Heliconia, Salam, Sawo, and many more.

In this event, each participant received a goodie bag in the form of a tumbler and a basket as an education to reduce plastic waste. Reducing plastic waste is one of the efforts to mitigate climate change.

Chief Financial Officer of PT Paiton Energy, Bayu Widyanto said the activity was one of the company’s program for environment and climate change mitigation. "The event with the theme of “Think Globally Act Locally” is a message for us to always participate in protecting the earth actively, to value the earth as a proper place for all creatures to live harmoniously and sustainably," said Bayu.

Human Resources Manager of POMI, Rochman Hidayat said that the planting of tree seeds that function as carbon sequestration and fruit is very important for Probolinggo Regency, which is a coastal area with the main objectives as natural protectors of the coast, increasing the area of conservation areas, and to reduce the risk of natural disasters. In addition, of course, the most important thing is to overcome the impacts of climate change for now and in the future.

Plant 15,000 Mangroves

Previously, also in commemoration of the 2022 Environment Day, Paiton Energy and POMI had carried out activities to plant 15,000 mangrove seedlings in the ecotourism area of Blekok Village, Situbondo Regency, East Java.

The activity, which is named “Mangrove for Future”, was held on Saturday, June 11, 2022 in the coastal area of Kampung Blekok, which is a mangrove area and habitat for Blekok birds.

The purpose of this planting is to preserve and improve the quality of the environment in the area around Situbondo which is also part of the Company's program in the conversion and reforestation-based environment.

The activity was attended by 200 volunteers involving 20 local Situbondo communities and also from outside the city. In addition, the mangrove farmers "Jaya Abadi" who are the people around Kampung Blekok also took part in this activity.

Blekok Village is an ecotourism area resulting from a synergy between PE – POMI and the Situbondo Regional Government as well as with the involvement of the surrounding community. This synergy is so that the community can benefit by preserving their environment and nature.

Chief Financial Officer of PT Paiton Energy, Bayu Widyanto said that the planting of 15,000 mangrove will have a positive impact to the environment in the local area, Indonesia and globally. Mangrove forests have benefits in mitigating climate change for the absorption of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases.

"In addition to having a tourist attraction, the coastal area in Blekok Village is also a source of abundant marine life and has a large area of mangrove forest. So, we actively participate in protecting the earth as a proper place for all creatures to live harmoniously and sustainably,” said Bayu.

For information, mangrove trees can also absorb carbon which is very important for climate change mitigation. The mangrove ecosystem of the pole category in Blekok Village has a total biomass of 2100 tons/ha and a carbon stock of 1092.6 tonsC/ha.

The focus of PE - POMI in this program is the conservation of Mangroves and Blekok birds through the Mangrove Center, Mangrove Planting Program, and the Conservation Campaign, as the environmental aspect

While for the community development, this program is focused on the capacity building program for tourism managers and the surrounding community, as well as other infrastructure.

Paiton Energy has implemented its CSR program since 2000 which was designed annually and monitored by the Community Development Committee. The programs are categorized into three focuses, namely supporting the sustainability of Companies (power plant), socio-economic sustainability, and energy and environmental sustainability.
